A cooling tower treatment programme does three jobs at once: it stops scale forming on heat-transfer surfaces, it protects metal from corrosion, and it controls bacteria including Legionella. Gotech designs the programme around your water and your metallurgy, doses and tests it on a set schedule, and documents every visit for your compliance file. A cooling tower is warm, wet and open to the air. It is also, by design, an evaporative device — which means every litre that evaporates leaves its dissolved minerals behind in the system. Scale concentrates, dirt blows in, and bacteria find a warm nutrient-rich home. Left alone, this raises your energy bills, eats your plant, and can trigger an EMSD notice.
The three problems are not independent. Push pH down to stop scale and you accelerate corrosion. Push it up to protect metal and you precipitate scale — and you also cripple your chlorine, because chlorine loses most of its killing power above pH 8. A programme is the act of balancing all three at once, continuously, on your specific water.
Hiring a contractor does not remove the building owner's legal responsibility for a cooling tower. If the work is not done properly, or the records are not there to show it was, the exposure stays with you. What protects an owner is two things together: treatment that keeps the water safe, and documents that prove it.
The bill for poor treatment is not one number in one year — it arrives continuously. Just 1/32 of an inch of scale can cut heat-exchange effectiveness by over 10%, which on a large chiller is real money every month. Corrosion, meanwhile, does not add a cost so much as drag one forward, shortening plant life and pulling a capital replacement years closer. And a Legionella count at or above 1,000 cfu/mL brings a statutory notice and emergency decontamination. We modelled all of this properly in the real cost of doing nothing — including the case where treatment does not pay.
It depends on the tower's size, duty and risk. A typical commercial tower is serviced monthly, with laboratory testing at a set frequency and cleaning scheduled separately. We set the interval from the survey rather than selling a fixed package, and we will tell you if you are being over-serviced.
Yes, and it is common. We start with an independent survey and water test so you get a clear picture of the condition you are inheriting. If you want that assessment before switching, that is an independent audit.
Usually pH. Chlorine forms hypochlorous acid, which dissociates to a far weaker form as pH rises — at pH 9 roughly 95% of your free chlorine is in the weak form. The test still reads a residual; the kill is not there. This is one of the most common failures we see, and we cover the chemistry in effects of pH on various biocides.
