Chlorine tablets (trichlor) are concentrated, slow-dissolving and easy to run without daily attention — but they are acidic and every tablet adds cyanuric acid stabiliser, which accumulates until it slows your chlorine down. Liquid chlorine (sodium hypochlorite) is fast, unstabilised and suits automatic dosing — but it is bulky, loses strength in storage, and nudges pH upwards. As a rule of thumb: tablets fit smaller residential and clubhouse pools without daily supervision; liquid fits high-turnover commercial pools, indoor pools and any pool with a dosing system. Never let the two products touch each other outside the pool.
Both products deliver the same working chemical into your water: free chlorine. The differences are in everything wrapped around that chlorine — how concentrated it is, how fast it releases, what else it carries into the pool, and what it does to your pH on the way.
Chlorine tablets here means trichlor — trichloroisocyanuric acid — pressed into slow-dissolve tablets. Ours are 200 g tablets, supplied in 1 kg packs and 25 kg drums. Trichlor is one of the most concentrated chlorine products made: roughly 90% available chlorine by weight, in a dry, stable tablet that erodes over days in a feeder or floater.
Liquid chlorine means sodium hypochlorite solution — chemically the same family as household bleach, but at commercial strength, typically in the range of 10–15% available chlorine when fresh. It mixes into the water instantly and leaves nothing behind except a little salt.

This is the difference that matters most over months, and the one tablet users most often discover late.
Trichlor is a chlorine molecule bonded to cyanuric acid — pool stabiliser. Every tablet releases both. The chlorine gets used up doing its job; the cyanuric acid does not. It is not consumed, it does not evaporate, and your filter does not remove it. It simply accumulates, tablet after tablet, at roughly 0.6 mg/L of cyanuric acid for every 1 mg/L of chlorine you dose.
A little cyanuric acid is useful in an outdoor pool — it shields chlorine from sunlight. A lot of it slows chlorine down: the water still shows a healthy free chlorine reading, but the chlorine kills more and more slowly. The CDC's Model Aquatic Health Code caps cyanuric acid at 100 mg/L and treats a cyanuric-acid-to-chlorine ratio above 45:1 as grounds to close a public pool. The practical rule: tablets are a fine way to run a pool, and a poor way to run a pool forever without testing. If tablets are your only chlorine source, test cyanuric acid regularly and plan for partial water replacement. If your stabiliser is already at target, hold it there by switching some or all of your dosing to unstabilised liquid chlorine.
Neither product is pH-neutral, and the two push in opposite directions.
Neither drift is a problem if you test and correct; both are a problem if you dose blind. The context for all of this is pool water balance — pH, alkalinity and hardness together.

Yes — many pools run tablets in a feeder for background dosing and use liquid for shock dosing. What you must never do is let the two products touch each other outside the pool. Store them separately, and never put one into a feeder, drum, or scoop that has held the other. Mixing them can cause a violent reaction, fire and toxic gas.
Stored dry, sealed and cool, trichlor tablets hold their strength for a long time. Liquid chlorine is different: it loses strength steadily from the day it is made, and heat and sunlight speed that up. Order liquid to match your actual usage rather than stockpiling it.
Yes. Trichlor is strongly acidic — a 1% solution sits around pH 3 — so a tablet-fed pool drifts down in pH and total alkalinity over time and usually needs periodic alkalinity top-up. Liquid chlorine pushes the other way: sodium hypochlorite is alkaline and nudges pH upward, so liquid-fed pools usually need small acid additions. Neither drift is a problem if you test and correct.
Generally no. Indoors there is no sunlight for the stabiliser in trichlor tablets to protect against, so the cyanuric acid they add only slows your chlorine down. Indoor pools should generally run unstabilised — on liquid chlorine, ideally through a dosing system.
